Becoming a Savvy Sustainable Shopper

The verdict is in: The global apparel industry is one of the worst culprits in contributing to environmental problems. From excessive water consumption used to grow textile crops to the harmful runoff of chemicals during treatment and dying processes, there's no escaping the fact clothing is a stressor on the environment.

As a clothing company, we've committed to doing our part by becoming a Certified B Corporation which means we conduct business ethically, sustainably, and responsibly in every aspect of our operations. We've also made immense strides forward to use sustainable fabrics and manufacturing methods to ensure a growing percentage of our collection is environmentally friendly. Thus far, we've reached 80% and will continue to strive ever closer to 100.

We want to join forces with you, our consumer, to live and shop with an eco-consciousness applicable to all aspects of daily life. For now, we're going to focus on how you can become an eco-smart shopper by following the following tips:

1. Identify Your Materials

Synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon, and viscose rayon, to name just a few, all require oil as part of their production methods, while cotton requires harmful chemicals both during the cultivation and fabrication processes. By opting for sustainably sourced fabrics, such as recycled polyester, organic cotton, and Tencel® Modal, a textile created in a pollution-minimizing closed-loop system, you can make informed choices to purchase apparel that has a far smaller environmental footprint.

2. Recycle the Clothing You Own

Instead of simply tossing out the garments you no longer wear, try clothing swaps with friends to refresh your wardrobe or upcycle pieces you no longer wear into entirely new items such as headbands, small bags, floor mats, or quilted pillows. The only limitation is your imagination though if you're looking for help, there are tons of ideas on Pinterest.

3. Buy Less, Buy Better

It might seem counterintuitive for a clothing company to endorse the idea of buying less, but we genuinely believe that purchasing higher quality garments you can wear for longer is a great way to lower your environmental impact. And because you're making more considered decisions when shopping, you'll become a more confident dresser and save money in the long run, all while doing your part to protect the environment.

4. Reuse/Recycle Clothing Shipment Materials

The boxes and poly bags your Mondetta Clothing orders come in can be reused in several different ways, including:

  • using the bags to transport wet items to and from the gym or pack shoes when travelling.
  • donating the boxes to animal shelters.
  • storage for off-season clothes you’d prefer not to clutter your closet or drawers.
  • passing on boxes to friends who might be moving.
  • using the boxes to pack up clothing you no longer use to donate to a thrift store or charity.

Of course, we understand real environmental change won't happen until government policies create regulations on some of the largest polluters on the planet. However, that isn't to say we can't set an example, inspire others to join us in our efforts, and perhaps even influence those policy amendments to happen sooner than later. A sincere partnership between producers and consumers is a step in the right direction and is one we hope you'll take with us.
