MPG Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility
Balancing current operating requirements with the potential impact on future generations is at the heart of sustainability efforts at MPG. By making concerted efforts across our entire organization, we are taking a holistic approach to ensure every aspect of our brand is conducting business ethically and responsibly and are proud to offer you sustainable activewear. One of our core values is creating fashion-forward, meticulously designed garments at unexpected price points which we will continue to adhere to but are now making substantial efforts to ensure MPG is at the forefront of innovative sustainable clothing brands.
To achieve those goals, our focus is on three core areas:
- Social Compliance
- Chemical Responsibility and Management
- Material Sourcing and Accountability
1. Social Compliance
Sustainability at MPG not only means operating in a responsible manner environmentally, it also includes following and upholding workplace standards to respect and treat with dignity every individual working in the complete supply chain process. All suppliers and factories in the MPG garment production cycle must follow binding and strict social compliance requirements. The following are some of the certifications MPG utilizes to work with compliant factories and facilities:
Based on principles of the International Labor Organization, all three independently monitor and certify standards of human resources management, health and safety, environmental practices, and legal compliance including import/export matters and customs and security which include:
Compliance with Laws and Workplace Regulations
Prohibition of Forced Labor
Prohibition of Child Labor
Prohibition of Harassment or Abuse
Compensation and Benefits
Hours of Work
Prohibition of Discrimination
Health and Safety
Freedom of Association and Collective Bargaining
In addition to the preceding certifications, MPG also conducts its own audits to verify social compliance at factories and suppliers.
In cooperation with US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), C-TPAT is a program providing the highest level of cargo security in international supply chains involving importers, carriers, customs brokers, and manufacturers to prevent any nefarious infiltration by bad actors. By adhering to the C-TPAT framework and following strict program oversight requirements, MPG is proud to contribute to safeguarding of US and Canadian borders and the citizens who live within.
2. Chemical Responsibility and Management
To ensure chemicals used in the production of MPG garments are nonhazardous, we rely on third-party organizations, such as bluesign® and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® to certify our suppliers are compliant with environmentally friendly and safe production standards including:
- Resource Productivity
- Consumer Safety
- Water Emission
- Air Emission
- Occupational Health and Safety
Eliminating harmful substances from the beginning of the textile production process and at every step along the way, bluesign® and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® provide manufacturers and consumers alike a guarantee that materials used in their products are environmentally friendly and all workers handling and dealing with those chemicals are doing so without a risk to personal health.
3. Material Sourcing and Accountability
The fabrics, textiles, and materials used in MPG garments undergo stringent screenings and certification checks, at every phase of the production system, to make the claim MPG sustainable clothing has been ethically sourced, completely verifiable. To achieve that standard of textile sustainability, we rely on a number of internal and external processes and partners:
As a non-profit certification organization, RWS provides manufacturers, in addition to every stakeholder in the supply chain, the ability to meet their obligations to respect both the land upon which sheep graze and uphold humane treatment standards before, during, and after the wool harvesting process. The transactional record, achieved by RWS audits, creates chain of custody integrity to ensure RWS-certified wool is being used in MPG garments.
Similar to RWS, RDS aims to safeguard ducks and geese from inhumane treatment and harm including but not limited to removal of feathers from live animals and force-feeding. The transactional record, achieved by RDS audits, creates chain of custody integrity to ensure RDS-certified down is being used in MPG garments.
Both RWS and RDS certification take into account the 5 freedoms of animal welfare:
- Freedom from hunger or thirst.
- Freedom from pain, injury, and disease.
- Freedom from distress.
- Freedom from discomfort.
- Freedom to express behaviours that promote well-being.
To create ethical clothing, we must not only safeguard environmental protections but also be mindful and steadfast in our commitment to protecting the animals that contribute to our supply chain.
GOTS is an international standard for organic textile processing which adheres to both ecological and social criteria and is administered by independent verification at each step of the supply chain. Textiles used in garments classified as organic clothing and labeled as ‘made with organic’ materials must contain a minimum of 70% organic fibres to be GOTS certified, the criteria of which includes, but is not limited to:
- All stages of production must occur separately from nonorganic fibres.
- All chemicals used in treatment including dyes and process chemicals must be evaluated according to established standards of biodegradability/disposability.
- No chlorine bleach.
- No carcinogenic dyes.
To ensure accountability and verify chain of custody integrity, each step of the supply chain process is audited to make any claims of organic fibre usage accurate and provable.
Similar to RWS and RDS, GRS is a standard of verified recycled materials tracked from input to final product ensuring social, environmental, and chemical practices are responsible and sustainable. Mondetta is GRS certified and presently, 80% of MPG’s Spring/Summer 2021 Collection use recycled fabrics.
Other environmentally friendly fabrics:
By tracing ethical sourcing at every step of the supply chain of custody, partnering with certified factories and suppliers, and receiving certification from independent third-party auditors to administer chemical management, material integrity, and social compliance, MPG is proud to offer ethical fashion options to its conscientious consumers.
